The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth indigenous Project 17A stealth frigate, into its Eastern Fleet on 11 July.
The warship is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in India’s Eastern Ghats.
Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
INS Mahendragiri is capable of undertaking the full spectrum of maritime operations, including fleet air defence, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction, surveillance, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).
INS Mahendragiri is the sixth Project 17A frigate to enter service within approximately 18 months. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said MDL and the Navy had achieved several milestones during the programme.
These included reducing the timeframe from launch to delivery from 63 months to 31 months and cutting overall construction time from 95 months to 75 months.
He added that all technical evaluations were completed during a single sea trial instead of the customary five to seven trials.
INS Mahendragiri is armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, the Indo-Israeli Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system supported by the MF-STAR radar, a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM), torpedo and rocket launchers, an Integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare System, an electronic warfare suite, and close-in weapon systems.
The frigate also operates an embarked multi-role helicopter. Displacing approximately 6,670 tonnes, INS Mahendragiri, can attain speeds of up to 28 knots. The ships are powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system.
The Nilgiri-class comprises seven Project 17A frigates. INS Nilgiri was commissioned in January 2025, followed by INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri in August 2025, INS Taragiri in April 2026, INS Dunagiri in June 2026 and INS Mahendragiri in July 2026.
The seventh and final ship, Vindhyagiri, is under construction at MDL. MDL has built building four P-17A warships, while Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, will produce three.
